To prevent further deterioration of the environment, the Government of India took several measures such as the introduction of the Plastic Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, as well as the concept of Extended Producers' Responsibility (EPR) in 2022 as a system to ensure the responsible handling of all plastic wastes in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner through extending the obligation to ensure that plastic wastes are recycled, repurposed, or resolved of upon the completion of their useful life.

Extended producers’ responsibility is a government approach to extend the liability to manage a product sustainably through to its end of life to certain persons. On February 16, 2022, a notification amending the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules was released by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change of the Indian government. The amendment required that all the manufacturers, importers, brand owners (PIBOs), and processors of plastic waste shall comply with the guidelines outlined in Schedule
